Program Note
“White Sail at Midnight” is dedicated to my grandmother Francis Marze, who was a prolific landscape painter. A Pittsburgh native, she knew gloomy, foggy nights very well. She found the beauty, light and drama in the gray haze.

Sometimes when I close my eyes
I see a white sail furling and unfurling,
no edges, just a tangle of light
moving beyond the known
and I believe then—maybe it’s not true,
but I feel then—that you’re still here—
a tremble of daring in hard rain.
The sudden flare of your spirit
comes back to me, even as the sea
scratches itself frantic, and the fog
opens up to take you in again.
