Dickinson

This cycle was inspired by the Apple TV+ series Dickinson, which captures Emily Dickinson’s young adult life; showing her as a creative, radical, empathetic, sexual, sometimes wild and deeply soulful young woman who defies her period’s narrow view of what a woman should be. While the show is essentially historically accurate, the characters speak in modern language and often break into hip-hop style dance in their period costumes. I intended to capture many styles with hints of flamenco, jazz, pop, minimalism, spoken text and musical theater idioms, and to write in a way that could appeal to audiences under 20. Dickson’s poetry is unparalleled in its ecstatic imagination!
