Program Note
Nights Without Sleep is a deeply personal song for the composer.  The words, taken from two poems by Sara Teasdale (Nights Without Sleep and A Little While), depict very accurately Baxter’s life as a composer.  Like other poets, Teasdale called her poems songs, which certainly aided in the connection between the poems and the songs that Baxter has written over his lifetime. The composer has given the song the subtitle A Composer’s Thoughts.
